What is this "Wall of Fame" Business?

Every week or two, our family is presented with a photo challenge. The submitted pictures are put to a vote and the first place picture will be posted here for all to see! This is our wall of fame! The participants in this contest rage in age from 6 to 60. Stay tuned to see what our family comes up with!

Photography Tips - Understanding Megapixels and your camera's capabilities

In the transition from film to digital we have had to learn some new terms and get used to new concepts. In the next few photo tips I'll try to decipher some of the tehno babble that accompanies the digital photography age.

What is a megapixel?
First let's understand what a pixel is. A pixel is a dot. All of the digital images you produce from your camera are made up of pixels. Pixels are very small though, so when you talk about them you use the term megapixel. one megapixel = one million pixels. If you have a camera that has 6 megapixel capability, that is 6,000,000 pixels! On your camera you may see a number like this 3000 x 2000. That adds up to 6,000,000 thus 6 megapixels! A 6 megapixel photo is going to take up about 2-3 meg on your computer or memory card. More megapixels means you are giving the image more information and this allows you greater freedom to print, enlarge and crop pictures without the image being "pixelated."

Take a look at your cameras. Find the menu option to see what size pictures you are taking. You should always have your camera set to the highest setting to take the largest pictures possible, otherwise you are not using your camera to its fullest potential. If you are worried about filling your memory card up, buy a spare. Download your pictures frequently and delete the photos from the card once you have them downloaded. If you take that perfect shot at a low megapixel setting you will have trouble printing, enlarging and cropping.
